The great ones endure and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. The seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed numerous #1 hits in pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary and has triumphed in film, television and live performances. It was in 1953 when Knight along with her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda and her cousins William and Elenor Guest formed the Pips. After Brenda and Elenor left, her cousin Edward Patten and good friend Langston George joined the group which was then renamed Gladys Knight & The Pips. After releasing their first album in 1960, they soon found themselves achieving icon status having recorded such memorable hits as “Every Beat of My Heart”, “Letter Full of Tears”, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, “The Nitty Gritty” and “If I Were Your Woman”. They went on to record hit after hit throughout the 70’s including “Friendship Train”, “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)”, “Midnight Train to Georgia”, “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”. All told, Knight has recorded close to forty albums over the years including four solo albums. Last month, Knight joined several performers including the Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce and Smokey Robinson at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff Wales as they paid tribute to the Michael Jackson at an event called “Michael Forever”. And this month, she’ll be honoured with a Legend Award at the Soul Train Awards. Gladys Knight still enjoys performing to sold-out audiences across North America and will be appearing for one night only at the River Rock Casino Resort on March 31, 2012.
